‎"hi, I'd like to have a piece of art done by you on my webcomic character. if you were to do it for free merely on art's sake i will be most pleasured then, if that is not the case let me know if you might do it as a comission and what are your conditions on that. hope to hear back from you"

LOL.

I wonder if this guy goes to the gas station asking for FREE GAS? Or a FREE SURGERY at the Hospital? And if not, inquires about the rates before paying for the service? *sigh*

Who here still gets these types of requests?  Aren't they just the most insulting, annoying, little shits of email requests ever?

WOW. That's fantastic! It's right on par with Craigslist job postings in how out there it sounds, lol! Stuff like that really boils my potatoes, lol!!

And personally, I think you handled that whole situation quite well. This is a perfect "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all" example. You didn't respond back to him and you vented on your personal journal. Yeah it's public but...I still don't see anything wrong with having a place to voice frustrations on, and this is definitely one of those occasions where one would want to just that!

Ha! My girl and I were just having a conversation about this yesterday. How people in general really don't put any value on art. It's sad when you really think about it. Folks really expect you to do them a favor for nothing. At the very least have something you can trade for. I feel your irritation man.

I just delete them right away before I even have a chance to think about it.

A couple times! I was surprised they approached me at all though. I found as a compliment in a way though since I don't usually get asked this. some dude on da asked me to design a character/mascot/logo for his da group.

The other 2 I would've done it if I werent super busy. Dante Basco (zuko's VA) his sister asked me to do some illustrations for her, but I couldn't due to school assignments all bunched up. same with this producer from the states known as infinity. he wanted to work with me on a more legit mate to mate kind of thing. I would've done both for free just because of the connections that I could've made from that but had to choose getting my own personal school stuff sorted. I know most will say stupid move, but I had no other way around it. I still have both of em in contacts so hopefully when school is out if I do contact them they will still be happy to work with me. I doubt it, if they would even remember me lol, but it's worth the shot.

I think you're overreacting a bit,dude
is just a guy asking - there's no harm in asking

I've done that too when I was working on my first OGN and thanks to me asking I managed to get awesome char designs from chamba, ivelin trifonov, david colman and many more artists that are a constant inspiration to me, it sure as hell woulda been awesome to pay them for their trouble but at the time I didn't had the chance and yet they still found the time to draw something

I too have been asked a few times and most of the time I try to help the fellow artists and now most of them are some great buddies of mine

would your answer be the same if David Colman or Dave Johnson or Joaquim Dos Santos or maybe Masashi Kishimoto or Koji Morimoto asked you to make him a picture for his comics/manga but he will not be paying you

you can always just say"Sorry I'm not available" and be done with it , cuz I'm sure that if one of your idols was asking you about something like this your answer would not be the same, and what if you asked a guy and he gave you the answer you gave here?

sorry to be a brat about it but there's always two sides on the coin, sure it's not the greatest request but it's not something that can't be taken care of easily, it's not like they've stolen your art or something

not trying to get you mad or something, just giving my opinion on the matter

Drazebot, I'm not mad. Some people here seem to have a problem with how I'm responding. He suggested something, in my eyes, is highly offensive. Does he know that? who knows? Who cares? He didn't even give his real name. Furthermore, I didn't even respond to the guy. I POSTED his email here. And gave my opinion on it and asked what everyone else thought about this. Aside from maybe 12 people or so here, the remaining 215+ responses agree with me, cause it's happened to them too. Everyone else has their panties in a bunch because although they dont walk a mile in my shoes, they seem to have an idea of how i should behave. I don't care what others think, otherwise i'd change my tune ( what would that make me?).

NO. because ALL OF THOSE GUYS work for a LIVING. They would NEVER disrespect me, in asking for me to do something for free for them. The fact that you brought them up is asinine in and of itself....not to mention, clearly shows your perception of what fame grants and what non-fame doesn't. It's a punk move in my book.

But you're allowed to do you. I'm a nice guy, generally. And for the most part, I'm non confrontational, but I have my line. This is one of them. I'm kind of an asshole to moochers. If you don't agree with me, that's awesome, cause it means we're individuals and don't try to make everyone like us.

We can agree to disagree.

I see your point Lesean, but I'm just saying don't rely on the fact that just cuz some guy is a pro and he works for a living he won't pull a thing like that

like I said I've been asked by artists - and I should add "way better then me professional artists"(not gonna give names) to make a pin up or a picture of their character and never in one conversation while talking about the pic the word money came in question(here I might add that I too go into the working for a living- making money for my kid and wife), and the thing is I wouldn't ask them it's just a picture for a fellow artist whom I respect and follow his work :)
I'm just awesome like that :D Mwahaha! :D

and like I said in the previous post my graphic novel is filled with maybe around 20 character designs done by different artist who like us work for a living, whom I contacted and money never came in the conversation :(
so I guess it's different with every artist
damn so much writing and no drawings in the process :D
all I want it to say is don't make it so personal dude- life's short - no need to get upset for something so trivial - you're part of the internet community and with it comes a lot of stuff(mostly spam) :)
