"The advice I like to give young artists, or really anybody who'll listen to me, is not to wait around for inspiration. Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work. If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you are not going to make an awful lot of work. All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself. Things occur to you. If you're sitting around trying to dream up a great art idea, you can sit there a long time before anything happens. But if you just get to work, something will occur to you and something else will occur to you and something else that you reject will push you in another direction. Inspiration is absolutely unnecessary and somehow deceptive. You feel like you need this great idea before you can get down to work, and I find that's almost never the case." - Chuck Close

Good luck on your projects this year!

True brilliant words spoken. Thank you for this. This is absolutely accurate in my case. (It's almost like during the process you find YOURSELF starting to 'inspire' YOURSELF with every progressing curve of the pen, stroke of the brush, or lofty line of a sentence.) :D

Agreed. Sometimes I feel like every time I sit down to draw I need to come up with something new and just sit there tapping my pencil on the desk. Lately I've been trying to break that habit by just drawing whatever that comes to mind; whether it be a previous character, figure drawing or some fanart.

this is especially true at art school...you cannot afford to wait around for inspiration you have to be constantly producing... I think it's a pretty important thing to learn, also constantly producing just makes you a better artist.

Seems like this quote's making the rounds recently. Haha, and the idea of getting stuff done is good and whatnot, but I really like Brandon Graham's response to it. [link]

I read Brandon's response. But Brandon, much like Chuck, is his own artist. While Brandon does have his opinion, i don't think it makes the point any less truthful. The commentary however brash, rings true about those who procrastinate. Every circumstance is different of course. I do think there is a difference between being inspired by ideas and being inspired to work. The latter gets you into a lot of trouble if you're on a deadline.

I agree, when that deadline rolls around, you either have the work or you don't. And I didn't think too much about how they seem to be addressing two different kinds of inspiration. (feel like Close might be addressing motivation more than inspiration maybe? Or I might be totally wrong, haha)

But either way, actually making stuff rather than waiting for the perfect conditions is most important. So I'm gonna follow the advice and get to drawing!

Also, thanks for posting these inspirational quotes and messages man!

I have experienced this firsthand with the projects I'm working on! I wish I knew that I couldn't wait around for inspiration when I was a younger artist... I got very few things done. But past is past, and now I know that great things will come out of just getting to work. Ideas spring into my mind unlike any other time, and those ideas are usually the best above all other ones.

Thanks for sharing!
