I HATE THIS GUY. Seriously. I quit, LOL.I discovered Kim Jung Gi during my years living in South Korea when I came across his first sketchbook in '09. It was a blue and red bible of non-stop art. it made me cry. SEEING him do what he does, however, makes me contemplating giving up art altogether, lol. T________T #SoGood

Why are we slower?About a month ago I finally got to meet an art hero of mine, Klaus Janson, a well known pro who's been in the industry for over 30 years. A mutual friend introduced us, and we hit it off right away. The group of us went through the Village hitting pub after pub, and soon I was drunk enough to ask Klaus something that had been bugging me.
I asked him if modern comic artists are, on average, slower than we used to be. He said yes, and I agreed.
From the Golden Age until the 80s, pencillers were generally expected to turn in at least two pages a day, while an inker was expected to turn in around 3-4. There were a handful of exceptions, I'm sure, but most of the artists could pump out pages like human printing presses. In the current comic industry, it's completely reversed: while a handful of artists can still hit this speed, the vast majority can't. Pencillers today struggle to produce a page-per-day, while inkers (those who still ink with ink) are hitting around 2.

Dust the FilmIf you've been following me on Facebook or Twitter you probably know by now that I've been working on a really cool short film called Dust. Which is being done by Ember Lab, a small yet passionate VFX studio. They hired me to do some of the creature concepts. (Thank you Kickstarter!)
These are concepts for the Hydra. Although very small in size the Hydra plays an important role in the film. As is the case with all the creatures in this film, the Hydra is based on organisms that actually exist in nature. The goal was to reference as many natural elements as possible as we developed the unique creatures in Dust. More creatures will be coming shortly

Making of Gathering - free video lecture!So I decided to record a lecture on the making of Gathering to share with the community. It is around 2.5 hours and is based on the lecture that I gave a few weeks ago at the Union event in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Gathering is a personal project by Alex Alvarez, created as a large scale detailed illustration for print. Using Maya, ZBrush, Bodypaint, Onyx, Shave, Mental Ray and Photoshop, this lecture gives an in-depth, although fairly non-technical, overview of the creation process. Suitable for viewers of all levels, Alex shares his techniques for layout, modeling, sculpting, texturing, shading, lighting, rendering and compositing the various elements. Q. What kind of tools do you use to draw?
A. It changes every now and then. Lately, I've been using a regular mech pencil with 0.5 HB lead.
Kneded eraser to clean my lines. Whatever hard eraser to really erase when needed.
For the inks I use mostly a Windsor&Newton (series 7, size 000) brush, the rechargeable Kuretake brush pen for thicker (and awesome) lines and whatever old brush for cool textures.
I'm still trying to find the perfect white ink/acrylic.
And I use Micron pens for straight lines.
And whatever black ink. Right now, Dr. Ph. Martin's Black Star.

A while back, I stated that I wanted to have a special soundtrack to accompany the book when it drops. Well, I found a composer to team up with on it! 
Surasshu (One 1/2 of Yogurtbox) will be manning the ship on the soundtrack, which will feature character themes, set piece melodies, and an overall jazzy (and hip-hop fuzed!), vidya-game influenced listening experience.

Very inspiring! Interesting to see the way Cannon Busters has shaped up over this last decade. I've been following your work on it since your postings on the dreamwave forums and have definitely been waiting a long time for this story. Definitely interesting metamorphosis from the comic to this animation.
