MONKEYING AROUND by LeSeanThomas MONKEYING AROUND by LeSeanThomas
Here's some more of my boredom sketches. Rough board done working late night at CN after finishing an act on BEN10:Alien Force (this spring y'all!). random idea. just felt like drawing Seung Kim's and Brad Rozman's Return of the Monkey King doing somethng.

no idea what the monster is. more or less a remnant of the tentacled beast i did in the MK illos i did back when.

these are fairly small drawings. About the length of my thumb.

steady on the grind y'all!

*NOTE* Boards read DOWN. not ACROSS!!!*

when you lay these out, do you trace the previous one for consistency or just eye ball it? Either way, you know i worship your story board man...well pretty much all your work i worship. Thanks for the inspirations and lessons and stuff man.

got a gig as an assistant designer at a children's accessories company around 19 years old. got exposed to animation work meeting various people who freelanced in the medium on the side at the job.

landed my first animation gig online around 22yrs old. Everything i learned was on the job by vets and pros. rest is history. I'm still learning. I got a ways to go.

Sweet, I always wanted to see the process of story boardin'.

Question?

Do art supply stores "supply" story board sheets....I've been looking all over for those.

no.

animation/film production studios supply them.

but really, you can create and print your own.

Nice movement I must say! I prefer vertical alignment (useful for horizontal movement or when they stand on the spot, without having to trace all the time). Don't know much north-american studios that take that approach though.

I prefer it too. i'm only allowed in my rough board stage (which is the level of quality you see above, more sketchy and loose) to stage this way. i have japanese anime board sheets. 5 panels per page, vertical down. in my clean ups i have to follow the boring "2 panels per page, left to right." board sheets used here at CN.

i never understood how you could get really fluid pose to pose staging in boarding with just 2 panels on a page, left to right. especially the way i stage. i literrally pose out key frames when i board. its hard to apply that to the format, but we'll see when the scenes come back.

overall fun stuff tho! thanks yo!

I have an old Akira Storyboard book and the FLCL storyboard book, and not only are they aligned vertically (with panels), but they're gridded for pans in any directions. That's such a time saver.
2 panels? Not even 3? Boy, they sure do love trees at CN! XD

well these board were done on the rough board sheets they have. which, essentially are just the 2 panel sheets complied together to make a sheet of 18 panels 9across of course) so i cut them up in PS and alligned them vertically.

i do have the sheets you talk about (and those storyboards). they are from Toho anime studios ( dont ask). i do my roughs on those.
